Born on the windswept Estonian island of Hiiumaa, Froncrete is transforming concrete into lightweight architectural furniture designed for modern living — from bespoke outdoor kitchens to distinctive interior spaces.
An Island, an Idea and a Different Kind of Concrete
Surrounded by the Baltic Sea, the Estonian island of Hiiumaa has a character of its own. Shaped by nature, craftsmanship and a strong sense of community, it is a place where unconventional ideas have room to grow.
It was here that brothers Viljar and Sander Kallaste began exploring a simple but ambitious question: could concrete become something more?
With backgrounds in economics and engineering, the brothers brought together different skills and a shared instinct for designing, building and solving problems. Before founding Froncrete, they had worked on a wide variety of projects, from trailers to museum interiors, gaining experience across design, technology and manufacturing.
More than 15 years ago, their curiosity led them to develop a new approach to concrete furniture. With support from their local community, they started in a small, worn-out garage on Hiiumaa, determined to challenge the conventional limitations of the material.
Their ambition was to create concrete furniture that combined architectural strength and distinctive character with greater design flexibility and reduced weight.
That ambition became Froncrete.
Lightweight Concrete, Limitless Possibilities
Traditional concrete is valued for its strength, solidity and timeless appearance, but its weight can make it challenging to use in furniture and bespoke design.
Froncrete set out to change that.
Through the development of its own specialised lightweight concrete mixture, the company created new possibilities for concrete furniture and architectural surfaces. The material allows Froncrete to produce distinctive furniture elements that combine a solid concrete appearance with a more practical construction.
This innovation has opened the door to a diverse range of applications, including kitchen cabinetry, bathroom furniture, outdoor kitchens and installations for public spaces.
Rather than treating concrete simply as a structural material, Froncrete approaches it as a design medium — one that brings texture, character and a sense of permanence to the spaces people inhabit.
Outdoor Kitchens Made for Nordic Living
Outdoor living is about more than being outside. It is about bringing people together, extending the home into the landscape and creating spaces that invite people to slow down, cook and connect.
Froncrete’s concrete outdoor kitchens are designed with this philosophy in mind.
Their architectural lines and tactile surfaces complement a wide range of surroundings, from contemporary gardens and minimalist terraces to coastal homes and summer houses. The natural character of concrete gives each outdoor kitchen a distinctive presence, allowing it to become an integral part of its environment rather than simply another piece of equipment.
Designed with outdoor use in mind, Froncrete’s approach brings together material innovation, practical functionality and enduring aesthetics. The result is outdoor furniture that feels at home in the Nordic landscape and is made to be enjoyed over many years.
Whether creating a complete outdoor kitchen or a bespoke solution tailored to a particular space, Froncrete combines technical expertise with the flexibility to bring individual ideas to life.
Crafted in Estonia, Shaped by Collaboration
Today, Froncrete continues to develop its expertise on Hiiumaa, working with designers and furniture manufacturers from Estonia, Scandinavia and beyond.
Collaboration plays an important role in the company’s development. By combining different perspectives with ongoing investment in product development, technology and production equipment, Froncrete continues to explore what lightweight concrete can achieve.
Its manufacturing capabilities extend beyond standard products. The company also undertakes customised projects, working with customers and design professionals to develop solutions for kitchens, bathrooms, outdoor spaces and public environments.
This combination of specialised material knowledge and adaptable production allows Froncrete to take on projects ranging from carefully considered individual pieces to more complex architectural commissions.
In November 2020, the company presented its innovative furniture manufacturing to Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid — a milestone that reflected the ambition and ingenuity behind its work.
Designed to Become Part of Your Story
For Froncrete, innovation has always started with a willingness to question what is possible.
What began as an unconventional idea in a small garage has developed into a specialised manufacturing business built around a distinctive material and a passion for design. Yet the original spirit remains: a belief that good ideas deserve to be explored, even when they challenge established ways of thinking.
From bespoke kitchen furniture to architectural outdoor kitchens, Froncrete creates products that bring together material innovation, thoughtful design and skilled production.
Rooted in Hiiumaa and inspired by the possibilities of concrete, the company continues to create furniture for people who value individuality, quality and a lasting connection between architecture and everyday life.
Froncrete — lightweight concrete. Lasting possibilities.
